Sandra Weiss
geboren in Südafrika, Saxofonstudium am Berklee College of Music in Boston bei Andy McGhee, an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste bei Christoph Grab und Nathanael Su, Fagottstudium an der Musikhochschule Luzern bei Stefan Buri, momentan wohnhaft in Zürich, CH.
Sie spielte u.a. neue italienische Volksmusik mit dem Orchestrina Ludiziana von Franco Ghigini, alte Schweizer Lieder neu interpretiert im Projekt Art & Weise von Dide Marfurt und Dodo Hug, Renaissancemusik auf historischen Instrumenten wie Schalmei, Pommer, Dulzian, Krummhorn, Gemshorn mit I Corteggiani von Christoph Peter, Westafrikanische Musik mit dem Perkussions-Ensemble Schlagart von Markus Maggiori mit Famoudou Konate, Daniel Pezzotti, Willi Kotoun, Roman Glaser, Südafrikanische Musik mit dem Trio Sumithram mit Lionel Sumithram und Chris Jaeger Brown sowie in verschiedenen klassischen Orchestern, Jazzformationen und experimentellen Musikprojekten in Europa, USA, Russland und Japan.
Ihre Musik konzentriert sich auf die Erforschung aller möglicher Klänge und Geräusche auf dem Saxofon und Fagott, als Soloprojekt und in ihren aktuellen Musikprojekten.

Für das Jahr 2014 erhielt sie das sechsmonatige Auslandatelier Stipendium New York der Stadt Zürich.
Für das Jahr 2022 erhielt sie das Werkjahr der Stadt Zürich.
2025 erhielt das Insub Meta Orchestra den Schweizer Kulturpreis „Spezialpreis Musik“. Das Orchester, in dem Sandra Weiss seit 2015 Teil davon ist, spielt u.a. Kompositionen von Cyrill Bondi und d’incise, von dem Wandelweiser Komponisten Michael Pisaro und dem schwedischen Komponisten Magnus Granberg.
Im 2025 erschien auch das zehnte Album "Exhaustion / Proliferation" (Sawyer Editions) vom Insub Meta Orchestra.
Im 2025 wurde sie mit dem Projekt )|Es-p a_c•e.s|(, als artiste in résindence der GMEA in Albi(FR) eingeladen.

Sandra Weiss
born in South Africa, studied saxophone at Berklee College of Music in Boston with Andy McGhee and at Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in Zürich with Christoph Grab and Nathanael Su. She studied bassoon at Musikhochschule Lucerne with Stefan Buri, currently based in Zurich, CH.
During the last years she played in various musical projects playing renaissance music on historic instruments, folk music, classical music, jazz, experimental and improvised music in Europe, United States, Russia, and Japan.
Her own music concentrates on exploring various sounds and noises on the saxophone and bassoon, as solo project and with her current collective projects.
"What is music? Sound - Noise - Silence put into form by humans...?! An act of resistance? It needs a necesstity..."
For the year 2014, she got the 6 month ‘Auslandatelier Stipendium New York’ (residency in New York City) from the culture departement of Zurich.
For the year 2022, she got the 'Werkjahr' from the culture departement of Zurich.
In 2025 the Insub Meta Orchestra recieved the Swiss Culture Award „Special Prize Music 2025“. The Orchestra, in which Sandra Weiss is part of since 2015, plays a.o. compositions from Cyrill Bondi and d’incise, from Wandelweiser composer Michael Pisaro and from the Swedish composer Magnus Granberg.
Also in 2025 the Insub Meta Orchestra released its tenth album "Exhaustion / Proliferation" (Sawyer Editions).
